Dom's Z car Build Thread

Welcome!

This is going to be one of the places I post up photos and updates of my Z car build thread.

Steven and I started working on my dad's old car back in October.

This entire project is dedicated to my father. It was his dream to build this car.

Car: '79 280zx
Goal: Dedicated track/drag car

For the engine we are going to be building up the L28 and turbo it along with a 5 speed swap and a stronger rear end etc.. you should get the idea

Day 1[/u]



All 4 tires were flat and we had to roll the car a good 75 feet, Down a drive way up the street and push it up another driveway into a garage. (Trust me it wasn't the easiest task). The best part of this was that we could only get 3 tires to bead and inflate well we get stuck on the curb and my aunt that doesn't really know here right from her left gets the tire to bead while we are stuck on the curb. (How frustrating lol)


So on the first day we got there at 9am and left around 12pm.

At first our goal was just to get the car running. Well the car wasn't started in 8 years and prior to that the car could barley run at all. So Steven and I spent all day attempting to get the car to run. Changing Fuel Filter, Oil, Fuel Pump you name it. we got it to fire up once at around 11:30PM that was probably one of the most happiest moments aside from killer exhaust smell. I'll leave it at that for now don't feel like typing a book I'll just update more with the next set of pictures.

Sorry ford kind of a jumpy time line wasn't really planning on making a build thread. Going to start working on it again and will take more pics to make a real time line.

Yes lol, This is going to be a great summer. I honestly think that we have gotten past some of the hardest stages of cleaning it up we have encountered 12+ Spiders (4 of which where black widows), all the dirt, old moldy carpet, taking out the disgusting seats and ripping the entire interior out. We also spent a good 3 hours scrubbing the inside of the gas tank it was all caramelized and just disgusting from 9 year old gas sitting in there. As for the car there isn't too much rust on the car but what I've been thinking is that in the early 90's the car got stored on a field of some sort then it was found Mid 90's and someone attempted to start restoring it, but they gave up as they most likely didn't know what they were doing. There are lots of bolts missing and some bolts from the fuel rail are gone and just tons of other MISC stuff. OH and the car got painted the color of a penny.

LMOA at watching Dom fear spiders! Good thing I was there to torch most of them.

Yes and this WILL be a fun project. I should be starting welding at CSN this fall which will help this build out alot. But right now, we need to pull the engine, trans, and driveshaft, etc next to get it down to a bare shell so we can fix minor cancer spots in the floors and rear quarters. Really looking foward to how this turns out in a few years!

For anyone that has Black Widow or any spider problems go get yourself a nice can of Lysol and a extended lighter then have some fun.

Got the wiring harness out and labeled along with rear hatch window and other MISC. parts.





Steven did a fantastic job getting the back window out









Yea thats about it just got it cleaned up real good and almost finalized the interior, heading to the engine bay next.

Oh and I should take a picture of your failed attempt on the front windshield, lol. You got lucky it just cracked and the only reason it didnt completely break is because you pussied out after telling me how its done after mobbin at it with a flathead screwdriver yanking and prying, lmao!

I was just CAREFULLY removing the weather stripping and trim until the glass decided to give up life. Oh well, I guess that's what plexiglass is for right? lol

I'll try and make this as easy as possible. The house I lived in for 12 years is my grandmothers. The whole garage and side yard is mine. That is where I keep the Z car. Well I have 5 women in my family and the oldest one thinks she runs everything. She came to me complaining about it being in the garage. So I was forced by her to move the Z out of MY garage, put it in the driveway with a tarp over it. So it's being decomposed alive at the moment until I'm able to get back over there and clean up the side yard because it's filled with a bunch of my aunts pointless SH!T.

I mean, my Z on jack stands was taking up less room then my grandma's damn Lincoln Towncar....

I have my own house and dont have room for a car in my garage! dont feel too bad, at least you got a place to do the work. I can't tell you how many times I have pulled motors or what not in a field, or a horse barn laying in who knows what!

My grandma's is pretty much my work shop. If you ever need space or a garage just let me know! I can probably fit about 3 focus's in a row in the side yard. About 7 of them in the driveway and about 6 of them in the 2nd driveway. Basically what I'm trying to get across is THAT THERE IS A LOT OF ROOM! or driveway perhaps.
