Hey guys,
I own a blue '02 SVT and just came across this forum. Glad to see a Foci forum in Vegas.
I'm actually looking for a reputable shop to take the car to as I don't have the patience or time to replace the alternator and pass. side drive shaft. Any Focus trusted shops around here?
Thanks in advance-

Unfortunately the car isn't mobile, or at least can't go very far - the alt. is beyond dead and there isn't enough juice to power the car's electronics.

Maybe one of us can come and help. I'll talk to a fellow club member about possibly coming and helpin' you swap out your alt.
Could possibly get this done for you in time for the MT Charleston run if you'd be able to go.

Awesome, thank you.
I have a fairly decent set of tools in my garage and I had the alt. just about removed yesterday but could not figure out how to loosen the tensioner pulley to drop the belt, so I put everything back together...

Oh what fun alternators are, lol. I've done a few of them myself. You're actually really close to me, I'm near Windmill and Pecos. If you want, we could arrange something for me to come over help/ guide you. I'm doing a timing belt and motor mounts on my dads SVT tomorrow but I could help you this weekend if you wanna start taking it apart back to the point where you got stuck.
As for the tensioner, take out a 13mm and 15mm box end wrench. Going from the top, put the 13 box end on the tensioner and take the box end of the 15 and slip it over the open end of the 13 to create more leverage. Hope that makes sense. Now turn the wrenchs as if you were tightening the tensioner bolt and the tensioner will move upwards giving some slack to the belt. Slip belt off alternator pulley and let the tensioner spring back. You'll also need to support the engine with a jack and block of wood under the oil pan as you'll need to remove the passenger side motor mount.
Although this job is a P.I.T.A, its not too bad. I'd definitely save your money and do it yourself (with my help) unless you're in a time crunch. In that case, I'd recommend taking it to Pepboys over on Sunset and Pecos and have Doug (my dad) work on it. He's been a mechanic for over 40 years and DD's an SVTF. Good luck!
edit: Oh and I recommend getting a FORD reman alternator. Autozone and likewise part place alternators have issues. I wasnt to happy when I installed a supposedly "new" alternator just to find out it was a dud also. After reading on FocusFanatics.com and FocalJet.com, I wasnt the only one either.

Welcome. Sorry to hear about your problems with the Focus. I'd lend a hand but I'm working 2 jobs and am also in the process of moving before the end of the month.

This weekend would be fine, I just need it back on the road again by Monday. I get what you are saying about the tensioner, its actually executing it that I don't see happening. I'll pick up an alternator tomorrow and start taking it apart again and see where I get this time.
I'm also wanting to replace my test pipe with a stock cat - so if anyone is interested in a test pipe let me know. If I can get to the upper bolts I'll be swapping that as well this weekend.

I'm really impressed with the amount of responses and willingness to help from such a small forum. I've been apart of many other larger car club forums before and none of them offered support like this.
Anyway, I plan on giving it another go tomorrow so if anyone would like to help out I'd be more than happy to provide compensation for time or pizza, beer, soda, whatever...
